(or you supply us with press-ready files) 4. once the design process is complete, custom plates are ordered. (the platemaking process normally takes about a week // rush service is available) 5. inks are mixed by hand, paper is cut to size, the press is made ready. 6. each piece is printed one-at -a-time, by hand. if a design contains three ink colors, each color is a separate run. if you've ordered 100 double-sided, three-color business cards, that means each business card is printed 600 times! Letterpress was the norm from its invention by Johannes Gutenberg in the mid-15th century until late in the 19th century. During the 20th century letterpress became too slow, too old, and too hard. Most letterpresses were sold for scrap. And it's true: letterpress printing isn't quick or easy. It's hard, long work but it yields a warmth and a tactile quality that just can't be achieved with any other printing technique. Especially when combined with soft papers, letterpress printing conveys a beauty that leaves a lasting impression. Wondering how it actually *works*?
